Depending on your school district you may or may not have the funding for class field trips. Teachers must be creative with the resources that they have. Using the Internet and the local community are two great ways that are innovative and inexpensive and still spark student interest.
Internet ideas:
- Virtual online tours of specific places
- Web sites
- Skype
- Google map/earth
Community walking field trip:
- local park
- local pond, lake
- local building
- local business
Depending on what content you are focusing on will allow you to do many different online/community field trips. It is a great way to get the students actively involved in learning.
I think it is very important to keep the students in mind when planning a field trip. Teachers need to know what their students can handle along with being able to recognize if any of their students are economically disadvantaged (where their parents may not be able to afford a field trip). It is imperative that field trips are inexpensive, yet fun and educational. Good ideas.
